Symptoms

A windows 2000/2003 DNS Service Ends Unexpectedly and Event 7031 Error Message Appears in the event log.

Cause

1. If you are using Windows 2000 Server with service pack version older then 4, please skip to the first� of "Resolution"�section in this knowledgebase.

2.�DNS Server that send numerous of simultaneous�DNS queries to another DNS server (Usually during DNS�forward queries process) may hung up
���� if the target server wouldn't be available to�DNS�forward queries.

Resolution

1. If you use Windows 2000 Server as DNS Server, make sure that you have the latest service pack or if you are using Service Pack 3 or older version
������ you may need to resolve this issue by following the instructions in:

2. If you are using Windows 2000 Server with service pack 4 or newer version or Windows 2003 Server, please follow the instructions bellow:
���� a. Create�DNS Server�- DNS name resolution�diagram - The diagram should contain information on DNS queries forwards.
���� b. Make sure that all DNS queries forwards are forward to DNS server meet the following requirements:
���������� 1. Have fixed network connectivity to the LAN and the DMZ/Internet.
���������� 2. Can handle�numerous of simultaneous� DNS queries.
���������� 3.�Recommended - Have high availability.
���������
3. Verity the correct IP forwarding settings in the registry:

��������� Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

��������� [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters]

��������� "PreviousLocalHostname"="servername.domainname.com"
