Microsoft PPTP Clients Cannot Authenticate

Summary

When Microsoft PPTP clients attempt to authenticate to the Routing and Remote Access server on ISA 2000 the connection fails. The ISA server's log shows an event ID 20189 indicating the failure of the client to authenticate.

Symptoms

Remote users with Microsoft PPTP cannot successfully authenticate through a Microsoft ISA 2000 Server running Routing and Remote Access.� They are told that their username and password were not accepted.� The ISA Server's System Log shows the following errors:

Description:
The user Domain\JoeUser connected from 123.123.123.123 but failed an authentication attempt due to the following reason: There was an authentication failure because of an unknown user name or a bad password.

Resolution

Check the following things.

1.� The user is typing their username and password correctly.� Confirm that the user does not have their CAPSLOCK key on.

2.� Verify that the NetLogon service is running on the ISA server.� The NetLogon service is responsible for passing the authentication thru to the domain controller.
