How to change terminal license server from domain mode to enterprise mode

Symptoms

There may be times when you need to convert the terminal license server from Domain Mode to Enterprise Mode. Usually, this process requires reinstallation of the license server. Another option is to change this mode manually, without the need of reinstallation process.

Resolution

To change the role of your Terminal Server License Server from Domain level to Enterprise level

Perform the following on your license server:

1. Go to "Start" -> "Run" -> Write "Regedit" and press the "Enter" button.

2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermServLicensing\Parameters

3. Change the Role Type value from 0 to 1. 0 is for a domain level terminal server and 1 is for a Enterprise License Server.

4. Go to "Start" -> "Run" and write "Adsiedit.msc" and press on "Enter" button.

Note: In order to run Adsiedit.msc you must first install the Windows Server 2003 Support tools.

5. Expand the Configuration container.

6. Expand CN=Configuration,DC=<domainname>,DC=<com>

7. Expand CN=Sites.

8. Click the container for the site that houses the Enterprise License Server, for example, CN=Default-First-Site-Name.

9. In the right-side pane, right click and select "New" -> "Object".

10. In the "Class Object" wizard, select "licensingSiteSettings" and click "Next".

11. Add a value with the name of "TS-Enterprise-License-Server" (without the quotes) and select "Next" and "Finish".

12. Close "Adsiedit.msc".

13. Go to Start -> "Run" -> Write "dssite.msc" and press the "Enter" button".

14. Open the site where the licensing server is located and double click on the "TS-Enterprise-License-Server" object.

15. Under "Licensing Computer" select "Change".

16. Select the Licensing Server and select "Ok", "Apply", and then "Ok".

17. Allow the changes to replicate to all the domain controllers.

18. Move the Member server back to the correct domain/site and then see if it can find the new license server.


19. Verify license server settings by using "lsview" utilitiy from Windows 2003� Resource Kit.
