How to set telemetry control for Skype for Business 2016

Summary

The following setting is to control how much telemetry data is sent from: 
  • Microsoft Skype for Business 2016 (Click-to-Run), version 16.0.6726.1000 or a later version.
  • Microsoft Skype for Business 2016 (MSI), version 16.0.4455.1000 or a later version.
Note The telemetry tier setting is also available for all versions of the Office 2019 product.

Flag name: TelemetryTier

Flag usage:

  • Tier0 (value 0) - Disabled. No telemetry is sent.
  • Tier1 (value 1) - Only Hearbeat. For more information about Heartbeat, see Introduction of Heartbeat telemetry for Skype for Business 2016.
  • Tier2 (value 2) - Only Hearbeat, but could be expanded for basic usage telemetry at MSFT discretion in accordance with global privacy law.
  • Tier3 (value 3) - All telemetry

Group Policy setting details:

  • Location: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync\TelemetryTier - DWORD
  • Default value: Tier2 (numeric value 2)

Note For Skype for Business on-premises users, you can use this Group Policy to establish the setting in users' computer registries before they sign in and begin receiving in-band provisioning settings from the server.
