Roll back from Build 18946 or 18947

We’re reaching out to share important information about a Windows update that was recently released to a small group of devices, including yours. This release was the result of a configuration change, which caused the update to go out to more devices than expected. If Windows 10 build 18946 or 18947 was installed by accident, it is important that you complete the steps below to roll your device back from this build as soon as possible. Returning to a currently supported version of Windows 10 will allow you to receive future updates as expected.

If you would prefer to roll-back on your own, please follow the instructions below. Important: Before taking action, we strongly recommend you back up your data.

Verify if your PC has installed Build 18946 or 18947 or if it is pending install. Once you have verified your PC is on this build, please follow the instructions to Go back to your previous version of Windows.

Verify if your device has installed Build 18946 or 18947

  • Click the Start icon
  • In the Search bar, type winver
  • Click WINVER (Run command)

You will see this window that shows which build number is installed on your device:

If your device has Build 18946 or 18947 installed, see the instructions to Go back to your previous version of Windows.

 

If Build 18946 or 18947 is not installed, verify if it is pending install

  1. Select Start
  2. Choose Settings (the sprocket icon)
  3. Select Update & Security
  4. Choose the Windows Update tab
  5. Verify whether build 18947 is pending install

Pending install

 

If your device has Build 18946 or 18947 showing as pending install, select Pause updates for 7 days.

Pause updates

 

This will cause the pending install to be cancelled. It may take a few minutes for this to register on your device. Once this completes, restart your device, then return to this screen and un-pause updates. You will not be offered these builds again, and Windows Update will scan for updates as expected.
