An update is available to users who experienced an issue making privacy settings choices while setting up a device.

Summary

As part of Microsoft's continuing commitment to your privacy, Windows Update will offer KB4489219 (1709),  KB4489220 (1803), or KB4499918 (1809) if it detects your device was one of the small fraction of those impacted by an issue affecting the display of privacy settings screens. Customers should have been presented with an option to choose settings related to their privacy while setting up their device and given additional information about how to change those settings at any time by going to Start > Settings > Privacy.

The small fraction of customers who were impacted will receive this update and will see a notification which will provide additional information about the privacy settings affected and guidance for changing the settings to the customer’s preferences.  

The privacy settings that were impacted are the following:

Location: We recommend customers review their Location privacy setting.  Review the Learn more content on how to change the Location privacy setting.  

Diagnostic data: To protect your privacy, this setting was updated to its lowest setting to ensure your device has the most privacy-friendly setting.  Review the Learn more content on how to change the Diagnostic data privacy setting. 

Improve inking and typing: To protect your privacy, this setting was updated to its lowest setting to ensure your device has the most privacy-friendly setting.  Note this setting only exists on 1803 and newer Windows 10 releases. Review the Learn more content on how to change the Improving inking and typing privacy setting. 

Customers can review their privacy settings at any time by going to Start > Settings > Privacy.
