Cannot configure proxy settings if a VPN connection name contains non-ASCII characters

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You cannot configure internet proxy settings for a VPN connection that has a name that contains Unicode characters that are not part of the US-ASCII character set (for example, Kanji characters, or characters that have accent or diacritical marks).

For example, when you create a VPN connection on a Chinese version of Windows, the default connection name is VPN 连接. Therefore, you cannot configure proxy settings for this VPN connection.

Workaround

To work around this issue, rename the VPN connection. Make sure that the new name contains only US-ASCII characters. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Network and Sharing Center item in Control Panel.
  2. Select Change adapter settings.
  3. Right-click the VPN connection, and then click Rename.
  4. Enter a new name that consists of US-ASCII characters (for example, VPN connection).
