"RPC server is unavailable" error when you deploy an SMB share for an RDS UPD in Windows Server

Symptom

When you deploy a Remote Desktop Services (RDS) environment that uses user profile disks (UPD), those files are typically stored on a Server Message Block (SMB) network share. However, in some scenarios, you receive the following error message:

Cause

This issue occurs if the SMB network share does not support Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).

During UPD configuration, the session host operating system must run a series of tasks that require WMI. For example, creating the VHDX template and setting up permissions on the network share requires WMI.

The error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section indicates that the SMB implementation for the network share does not support WMI. Therefore, it cannot be used for UPDs.
