Description of the security update for Excel 2016: February 12, 2019

This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Excel 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see Determining your Office version).

This security update contains fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:

• In some cases when you work in Print Preview Full Screen mode, certain shapes that render over the grid are either not displayed or are displayed as clipped.

• Assume that you copy many cells in Microsoft Excel 2016. When you view the Clipboard task pane, Excel 2016 hangs. This issue also occurs when you paste the cells as HTML into another application or another instance of Excel 2016.

• When you copy a cell that has an ID property, Excel 2016 crashes when you try to paste it.

• You do the following: Open a SharePoint Online library by selecting Library > Open with Explorer, open an Excel workbook and a Word document in File Explorer, and then copy and paste a link from a worksheet to the document by selecting Paste > Paste Special > Paste Link > HTML Format. In this scenario, the paste operation fails, and the following error message is displayed in Word 2016:

  Word cannot obtain the data for the {00020830-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} link

• This update fixes the following Power BI issues:
  • When you open a file that contains corrupted Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) metadata, Excel 2016 crashes.
  • The Data Model is immediately loaded in the x86-based version of Excel 2016. However, the load of the Data Mode is unexpectedly delayed in the x64-based version of Excel 2016.
  • Failures occur when you group or ungroup data in a PivotTable. These failures may cause Excel 2016 to crash.
  • Excel 2016 sometimes crashes when it closes.
  • Excel 2016 crashes when it connects a slicer that has no caption to a PivotTable. Excel 2016 may also crash when a filter is applied to a field that does not exist.
  • After you update a table name in the Data Model, the PivotTable Field List does not show the updated table name.
