System Center Configuration Manager incorrectly upgrades Windows to Windows 10 Professional

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

By default, when you use System Center Configuration Manager to upgrade Windows to Windows 10, version 1709 or later versions, Windows is upgraded to Windows 10 Professional edition instead of any other Windows edition that was previous installed (for example, Windows 7 Enterprise or Windows 10 Enterprise Version 1511).

Cause

This issue occurs because the upgrade package and the .iso image for Windows 10, version 1709 or later versions include the index files for all Windows 10 editions and treat the Professional edition as the default.

Resolution

During the task sequence for the upgrade, create a task for inputting the correct product key for the operating system that you want to use. Then, use the KMS Client Key for the appropriate version of the operating system.
