Time server configurations are lost after an in-place upgrade to Windows Server 2016 (Version 1607)


Symptoms

Assume that you have a Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer that was configured to advertise as a time server. After you do an in-place upgrade on the computer to install Windows Server 2016 Version 1607, the computer is no longer advertised as a time server.

When you run DCDIAG on the server, you receive the following message:


Note This issue does not occur if you do a clean installation of Windows Server 2016.

Cause

This is a known issue in Windows Server 2016. Setup does not correctly configure the Time Service registry values when you do an in-place upgrade.

Resolution

This issue can be avoided by letting the setup process install the latest updates during the in-place upgrade.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer
  3. Set the DWORD value of Enabled to 1.
  4. Open an elevated Command Prompt window, and then run the following command: 

    net start w32time
