Improvements and fixes

Build 15254.1 is the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update for Mobile.

The following important changes are made in this update.

Two-factor authentication

In this update, we introduce a two-factor authentication unlock mechanism for Windows 10 Mobile. An enterprise can now enforce an additional security layer on its sensitive data by using an MDM policy. After two-factor unlock is enabled, a phone user must enter a numeric PIN followed by an enterprise-defined factor to unlock the phone. An example of an enterprise-defined factor is a companion device, such as an NFC tag, that can be used to unlock a phone by using our Companion Device Framework sample app and documentation.

AppLocker improvements

Customers provided feedback about the warning prompts for apps that are blocked by enterprise policies. We improved the UX and updated the MDM SyncML scripts that are associated with the policies. Application restrictions can be configured by using ApplicationManagement CSP or AppLocker CSP.

VPN improvements

In the modern corporate workplace, mobility is mainstream, and secure access to corporate data through a VPN has become standard practice. We are providing several improvements and features that increase the reliability of VPNs on Windows 10 Mobile. Important updates to the VPN capability are as follows:

  • Several reliability improvements for VPN connectivity in Windows 10 Mobile.
  • IKEv2 sleep and power improvements:

    • The VPN completes all pending actions before sleep, and then disconnects.
    • An automatic reconnection is made on resume.
  • Force tunneling improvements are made for the UWP platform.
  • Proxy improvements are made for the UWP VPN profile.
  • MMS usage is enabled when the VPN is connected.

Emoji 5.0

We added support for the latest Unicode updates. This includes new snacks, actions, dinosaurs, and even fantasy characters such as genies, fairies, and zombies. These are all accessible by using the touch keyboard and the Emoji Panel. Some original emoji designs are updated based on user feedback. They are also updated to improve consistency with how the emojis are displayed on other platforms (while maintaining the Windows style).

Portrait mode orientation in Continuum

We introduced portrait mode support for Continuum. On a portrait-oriented monitor, the phone displays in portrait mode instead of landscape mode.

Time & language settings page

We improved the Time & language settings page UX for Speech and Keyboard language downloads. Previously, there was no indication that a restart is required to complete the installation. Now, when the update reaches the restart-pending state, a “Restart Required” message appears under the language indicator.
