UPD disk does not attach to VMs when a DVD drive is configured in Windows Server 2016

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You set up a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environment that's based on a Generation 2 virtual machine (VM) in Windows Server 2016.

  • The VM has a DVD drive that's configured in a location next to the hard disk drives on the SCSI controller. Generally, this is "location 2."

  • You configure the VDI environment to use a User Profile Disk (UPD).

  • You log on to the desktop.

In this scenario, the profile disk does not attach to the VM. Therefore, a temporary user profile is incorrectly used. Also, the following event is logged in the event log:

Workaround

To work around this issue, remove the DVD drive or reconfigure it to another location.
