SCSI Mode Sense commands don't work for NVMe drives in Windows Server 2012 R2 or earlier versions

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use NVMe drives on a computer that's running Windows Server 2012 R2 or an earlier system version.
  • The NVMe drives are installed by using the StorNVMe.sys Windows built-in driver.
  • The drives don't support volatile write caching.

In this scenario, the functionality that depends on SCSI Mode Sense commands (such as creating a raid) don't work.

Workaround

To work around this issue, upgrade the operating system to Windows Server 2016.

Or, check with the hardware vendor for appropriate third-party disk drivers.

More Information

For all usages except mirror boot volumes (that use a mirror volume to host the operating system), dynamic disks are deprecated. For data that requires resiliency against drive failure, use Storage Spaces. Storage Spaces is a resilient storage virtualization solution.

For more information, see Virtual Disk Service and Windows Storage Management API.
