Incorrect Automatic Updates notification is received even though AU options are disabled in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You periodically receive a "We have been unable to scan for updates for 30 days" notification even though the Automatic Updates (AU) feature is disabled. This issue occurs in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

Cause

This issue occurs because of the behavior of the following Group Policy settings:

  • AUOptions
  • NoAutoUpdate
To disable Automatic Updates, you can set AUOptions to 1 (Never check for updates - not recommended), or set NoAutoUpdate to 1

Under certain circumstances, if NoAutoUpdate is set to 1 but AUOptions is not configured or is set to a value other than 1, Automatic Updates is not completely disabled. In this situation, the feature no longer scans for updates but may display unintended notifications.
