"Device is not a Surface Pro 3" error when you install Surface Pro 3 .msi file

Symptoms

When you try to install the Surface Pro 3 .msi file on a device, you receive the following error message:

This device is not a Surface Pro 3. Please choose the right device in order to proceed. Aborting this operation.

If you run MSINFO32 in this situation and check the model (or run a WMI query for the model), the device may report "OE" or "O_E_M_C." You expect it to report “Surface Pro 3.”

Cause

The Surface Pro 3 incorrectly reports the error information that's described in the "Symptoms" section.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, download the latest .MSI file for Surface Pro 3 that has Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 installed.
