Exchange Information Store does not start and events 1121 and 5000 are logged

After you install Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may not start, and you may receive the following event ID messages in the Application event log:

This behavior may occur if the organization name that you select during setup contains the forward slash mark (/) character. For example, the name "Organization/Europe" causes this behavior.

This behavior may also occur if you have unchecked or removed the SMTP and X400 addresses from the default recipient policy. Versions of Microsoft Exchange Server that are earlier than Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 must have both SMTP and X400 proxy addresses specified and enabled for the default recipient policy. Exchange 2007 requires only SMTP.

Exchange does not support some characters in organization names or in administrative group names. The following list lists the unsupported characters:

• ampersand (&)
• angle brackets (< >)
• asterisk (*)
• at sign (@)
• backslash (\)
• braces ({})
• brackets ([])
• caret (^)
• colon (:)
• comma (,)
• dollar sign ($)
• equal sign (=)
• exclamation point (!)
• forward slash mark (/)
• grave accent (`)
• number sign (#)
• parentheses (())
• percent (%)
• period (.)
• pipe (|)
• plus sign (+)
• question mark (?)
• quotation marks (" ")
• semicolon (;)
• single quotation marks (' ')
• tilde (~)
• underscore (_)

The following list contains the only characters that you can use in organization names or in administrative group names:

• hyphen (-)
• lowercase letters from a through z
• numbers from 0 through 9
• space ( )
• uppercase letters from A through Z
