XADM: Error Message When You Install the Active Directory Connector

When you try to install the Active Directory Connector (ADC) from the Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Service Pack 3 (SP3) CD-ROM or from a network share that contains the Exchange 2000 Server SP2 or SP3 ADC files, you may receive the following error message: When you click OK, you may receive the following error message in the ADC Setup Wizard: You may receive this error message although you were able to successfully run the setup /forestprep and setup /domainprep commands by using this account.

This behavior may occur if security permissions are not propagated to the following Windows registry subkey: The Exchange 2000 Server ADC needs permission to this registry key to store the account password that you specify on the "Service Account" page of the ADC Setup Wizard.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32 in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine window to select it, and then click the SECURITY subkey.
   
   NOTE: This registry subkey may appear to be unavailable (dimmed).
3. On the Security menu, click Permissions.
4. Click Administrators in the Name list, click to select the Full Control check box in the Allow column, and then click OK. The SECURITY subkey is no longer unavailable.
5. Double-click SECURITY, double-click Policy, and then click Secrets.
6. On the Security menu, click Permissions.
7. Click to select the Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object check box, and then click OK.
8. Quit Registry Editor.
