XWEB: You Cannot Delete Messages and NDRs with a Space at the End of the Subject Line

Symptoms

You may not be able to use Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) to open, reply to, forward, or delete a message in your Exchange 2000 mailbox. You may receive the following error message in the browser:
The page cannot be found

The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

HTTP 404 - File not found

However, if you use Microsoft Outlook, you can successfully open, reply to, forward, or delete the message.

Cause

This problem occurs because OWA does not permit you to open, reply to, forward, or delete a message with a space at the end of the subject line. The message can be a typical mail message or a non-delivery report (NDR).

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.

After you install this fix, any existing messages with this problem still exhibit the symptoms that are described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. You must use Outlook to manually remove such messages.
