OFF2000: Excel Workbooks and Word Documents Save Slowly

Symptoms

When you save Excel workbooks or Word documents to a Novell Netware 5.0 server, you may experience unexpected delays during the save operation. Specifically, you may experience delays of several minutes, regardless of the size of the file.

Cause

This behavior occurs if all of the following conditions are true:
  • Your network server is running Novell Netware version 5.0.
  • Your workstations are running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.
  • Your workstations are using the Novell v4.8 client for Windows NT.
  • McAfee NetShield is installed on the server.
  • The file caching option is enabled for the file server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, turn off the file caching parameter in the properties of the Novell Client for Windows NT in Network Properties. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  2. Click the Services tab, click Novell Client for Windows NT, and then click Properties.
  3. Change the file caching parameter to Off.
