Symptoms

When you run the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Merge program (Exmerge.exe) to move mailbox data from Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Server to Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, you may receive the following errors in the Exmerge.log file when you try to import the data to Exchange 2000 Server:
[15:34:46] Entered Routine: (CMapiSession::CreateEMSPSTProfile)
[15:34:46] Error configuring message service (MSPST MS) (UNKNOWN ERROR)
(CMapiSession::CreateEMSPSTProfile)

Cause

This behavior may occur if the personal folder files (.pst) are marked as Read-only.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, remove the Read-only attribute from the .pst files, and then run Exmerge. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Explorer, and locate the .pst files.
  2. Right-click each .pst file that contains the data that you want to import, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Click to clear the Read-only check box, and then click OK.
