Symptoms

When you start the Linked Table Manager in a Microsoft Access 2000 database that contains linked tables to an Oracle database, the following may occur:
  • Only one table appears in the Linked Table Manager.
  • No linked tables appear in the Linked Table Manager.
  • A timeout error appears as the Linked Table Manager is loading the list of tables.

Cause

The Oracle server returns a synonym for each table name that is mapped to each available user name, thereby causing the list of available tables to exceed the 64,000-character display limit for the combo box that the Linked Table Manager uses.

This typically occurs when there is either a large number of Oracle tables, a large number of Oracle users, or a combination of both. For example, an Oracle database with 300 tables and 300 users would return 90,000 table synonyms, rather than returning 300 table synonyms to the Linked Table Manager.

Resolution

The following steps describe how to modify the AttachableObjects subkey in the Windows registry and how to delete the Synonym value from the Value Data list.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Start the Registry Editor and move to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\Engines\ODBC
  2. Right-click the AttachableObjects string value, and then click Modify.
  3. Delete the following text from the value list:
    ,'SYNONYMS'
