Symptoms

After you delete the last Microsoft Exchange 5.5 server in the Exchange organization, you cannot mail-enable Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 public folders. Folders created before the Exchange 5.5 server was removed are mail-enabled and function correctly.

When you try to mail-enable an Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 public folder in Exchange System Manager, you may receive the following error message:
The mail proxy for this folder cannot be found. This may be due to
replication delays. The mail enabled pages will not be shown. ID no: C1038a21
You may see the following events in the Application Event log:

Cause

This problem occurs if you do not remove the Exchange 5.5 Connectors before you remove the last Exchange 5.5 server. This problem may also occur if you do not uninstall third-party Microsoft Exchange Development Kit (EDK) connectors before you remove the last Exchange 5.5 server. For example, you do not uninstall an EDK connector such as Fenestrae Faxination.

In the example in the "Symptoms" section of this article, the Exchange 5.5 Internet Mail Service and the MS-Mail Connector were not removed before the last Exchange 5.5 server was deleted from the organization. Other connectors such as Connector for Lotus cc:Mail or Site Connector may be mentioned in the events, depending on the connectors installed in Exchange Server 5.5.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps. Warning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, or both Windows and Exchange. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.
  1. In the Active Directory Sites and Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC), double-click Active Directory Sites and Services.
  2. On the View menu, click Show Services Node.
  3. Double-click Services, double-click Microsoft Exchange, and then double-click the Exchange Organization name.
  4. Double-click Administrative Groups, and then double-click the administrative group where the Exchange 5.5 connector server resided before it was deleted. For example, double-click the First Administrative Group.
  5. Double-click Routing Groups, and then double-click the routing group where the Exchange 5.5 connector server resided. For example, double-click First Routing Group.
  6. Double-click Connections.

On the right side of the MMC, you can see the connectors that used to belong to the removed Exchange 5.5 server. In the example shown in the "symptoms" section of this article, you can see the IMS Connector and the Connector for MS Mail, which are unnecessary.
  7. Delete the unnecessary connectors in ADSI Edit.
  8. Wait 15 minutes for replication to occur, and then try to mail-enable the Exchange 2000 or the Exchange 2003 public folder again.
