Symptoms

When you try to start Microsoft FrontPage, you may receive one or both of the following error messages:
Runtime error 440.
Automation error
-or-
FPECOM Runtime error 5.
Invalid procedure call or argument.

Cause

This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The Microsoft bCentral Commerce Manager Add-in for Microsoft FrontPage is installed on your computer.

    -and-
  • The entry for the add-in in the Windows registry is damaged.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, delete the bCentral Commerce Manager Add-in registry entry and remove the add-in from your computer. To do this, follow these steps in the order in which they are presented.

Part 1: Delete the bCentral Commerce Manager Add-in Registry Entry

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

    WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\FrontPage\Addins\FPEcom.AddIn
  4. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  5. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit to quit the Registry Editor.
  7. Restart your computer, and then start FrontPage.
  8. Do one of the following:
    • If you do not receive the error message, the issue is resolved. Proceed to "Part 2: Remove the bCentral Commerce Manager Add-in" later in this article.
    • If you receive the error message, continue with step 9 to further troubleshoot this issue, and then proceed to "Part 2: Remove the bCentral Commerce Manager Add-in."
  9. Click Start, and then click Run.
  10. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
  11. Locate and then click the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\fpecomm
  12. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  13. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  14. On the File menu, click Exit to quit the Registry Editor.
  15. Restart your computer.

Part 2: Remove the bCentral Commerce Manager Add-in

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click bCentral Commerce Manager Add-In for Microsoft FrontPage, and then click Change/Remove.
  4. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.
