Network adapter branding does not change after a driver update

View products that this article applies to.

Summary

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows Server 2016-based computer.
  • The system includes a network adapter (also known as a Network Interface Card) that uses an in-box driver.
  • The card is updated by using a retail (out-of-box) driver.
In this scenario, the installation of the network adapter driver is successful. However, after the installation, the friendly name of the network adapter that is displayed in Device Manager does not change. Instead, the card keeps the device name that is specified by the in-box driver.

Note To view the retail branding for the network adapter, see the description in the Properties dialog box for the device.
