Symptoms

When you try to install Visual Studio Tool for Office (VSTO) Add-in targeting .NET Framework 3.5 to Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus or Microsoft Office 2016 Professional Plus, the installation fails.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Business Connectivity Service component is installed in Office. This component is included only in the Professional Plus edition.

Workaround

To work around this issue, rename the “VSTOInstaller.exe.config” file or delete it before your install the VSTO add-in. By default, this file is in one of the following locations:
  • %CommonProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Shared\VSTO\10.0\VSTOInstaller.exe.config
  • %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\VSTO\10.0\VSTOInstaller.exe.config
