Features and improvements

The following features are included in this update of Azure Backup Server.

VMware backup

With this update, Azure Backup Server customers can start protecting virtual machines (VMs) that are also running on the VMWare platform.

The following are high-level features of VMware VM backup:

  • Agentless backup
  • Detection and backup of VMs through vCenter/ESXi v5.5 or v6.0 servers
  • Detection and protection at the folder level if customers organize VMs in VM folders in vCenter
  • Protection of VMs that are stored on cluster storage, NFS, or direct attached storage
  • Recovery of a complete virtual machine or individual files and folders by using item-level recovery for Windows VMs

Security features

This update includes the following improvements to security features of Azure Backup. These improvements provide increased resilience and recoverability from adversarial attacks on your important business data.

Retention of deleted backup data

Azure Backup can now retain deleted cloud backup data for 14 days from the day of deletion. This makes it easier to recover your data after an attack.

Minimum retention range

Minimum retention range checks make sure that more than one recovery point is available to recover from after an attack.

Azure Portal-based authentication

An additional layer of security is added by using Azure Portal-based authentication for critical operations that affect availability of your organization's backup data.

Security alerts and notifications

Security alerts and notifications would be sent to the subscription administrator when you run critical operations that affect your backup data. This enables you to keep a close watch on intrusive operations that are made by unauthorized personnel.

Issues that are fixed

  • If a virtual machine is already replicated by using Azure Site Recovery, Azure Backup Server can’t protect it.
  • Item-level recovery does not restore custom permissions when Microsoft SharePoint is running localized language packs.
  • Assume that there are several virtual machines on the Hyper-V host that are physically removed. When you try to stop protection of these virtual machines, the Azure backup server user interface crashes.
  • SharePoint-optimized item level recovery (ILR) does not work if Azure Backup Server encounters a data item it can't access during cataloging.
  • Azure Backup Server crashes when you try to configure SMTP settings.
  • Optimized item-level recovery doesn't work for a SharePoint farm. This causes the full farm data to be copied to the staging server that's running Microsoft SQL Server.

This update brings Azure Backup Server users to the same version level as Update Rollup 11 for System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager users.
