Symptoms

After you install the Exchange 2000 version of Active Directory Connector (ADC) on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based Active Directory child domain, the installation completes and the service starts.

However, the ADC service logs the following two errors in the event log, which indicate that the initialization process was unsuccessful because the correct entries were not found in the directory:
Event ID: 8064
Could Not read entry 'CN=Exchange Settings,CN=child_ADC_server,CN=Servers,DN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN-Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=root_domain,DC=dom'
on directory server.child.root_domain.dom.
Make sure that service was installed properly.

Event ID: 8108
The initialization process failed.

Cause

This behavior occurs if the addition of the ADC to the schema of the root domain is not replicated to the child domain. After replication has occurred between the parent and child domain, the ADC service starts and runs normally.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, permit the schema to replicate to the child domain.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

More information

The Setup process writes the schema updates to the schema master, which is in the root of the forest, but the service reads from the child domain.
