XL2000: Contents of PivotTable Disappear When Data Is Updated in a Different Language Version of Excel

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel, if you create a PivotTable that is based on multiple consolidation ranges, open the file in a different language version of Excel, and then update the data, the contents of the PivotTable disappear.

Cause

With multiple consolidation ranges, Excel uses internal field names (for example, Column, Row) that are localized in each language version. When you update the data in a different language version, Excel cannot translate the internal field names and therefore cannot locate the correct data.

More information

This fix forces localized versions of Excel 2000 to use the English strings--for example, Column or Row--instead of the corresponding localized strings.

PivotTables that were created before this fix is installed will not be affected by the fix. To correct an existing PivotTable, you must recreate it.

Additionally, the fix causes the data to be lost when you open a PivotTable that was created in a patched, non-English version of Excel in a non-patched, non-English version of Excel. This occurs because the non-patched version cannot interpret the English version of the internal field names.
