Error Message in Excel 2000: "No RETURN() or HALT() function found on macro sheet"

Symptoms

When you switch between two workbooks several times, you receive the following error message:
No RETURN() or HALT() function found on macro sheet

Cause

This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are true:
  • The AutoSave feature is turned on, and the Save All Open Workbooks option is selected.
  • Workbook_Activate and Workbook_Deactivate code is in at least one of the two workbooks.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After the hotfix is installed, the following files will have the listed attributes or later:

Workaround

To work around this problem, change the AutoSave configuration to save only the active workbook. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoSave.
  2. Under Save Options, click Save Active Workbook Only.
  3. Click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3).
