How to use Adminpak.msi to install a specific server administration tool in Windows

This article describes how to install individual server administration tools from the following Administration Packs:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Administration Pack (Adminpak.msi) on Windows 2000-based computers
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack (Adminpak.msi) on Microsoft Windows XP-based computers and on Windows Server 2003-based computers

    Note You can install Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack only on Windows XP-based computers and Windows Server 2003-based computers.
The Windows 2000 Adminpak.msi file is not available on the Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM. But you can install it from the CD-ROM that is included with the following products:
  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Windows 2000 Datacenter
This article refers to this CD-ROM as the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

To remotely administer Windows 2000-based and Windows Server 2003-based computers, you can install and run the administration tools from the Windows 2000 Adminpak.msi file on the following computers:
  • Windows 2000 Professional-based computers
  • Windows 2000 Server-based member computers
  • Windows 2000-based domain controllers
The Windows Server 2003 Adminpak.msi file is not available on the Windows XP Professional CD-ROM. But you can install it from the CD-ROM that is included with the following products:
  • Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition
  • Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
This article refers to this CD-ROM as the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM.

To remotely administer Windows 2000-based and Windows Server 2003-based computers, you can install and run the administration tools from the Windows Server 2003 Adminpak.msi file on the following computers:
  • Windows XP Professional-based member computers
  • Windows Server 2003-based member computers
  • Windows Server 2003-based domain controllers
In rare cases, Windows 2000 administration tools have limitations when you use them to remotely administer Windows Server 2003-based computers. Use MSIEXEC to install a specific server administration tool that is contained in Adminpak.msi

By default, when you install the Administration Pack, all the available tools in the Administration Pack are installed. However, you can use Windows Installer command-line switches to install specific server administration tools.

For example, you can run the following command from a command prompt:
msiexec /i adminpak.msi ADDLOCAL=AdminToolAbbreviation /qb
NoteAdminToolAbbreviation is the abbreviated name of the server administration tool that you want to install and that is contained in the Windows 2000 Adminpak.msi file or the Windows Server 2003 Adminpak.msi file.

Note You must copy the Adminpak.msi file to a location on the hard disk that is included in the Windows path, or you must include the path of the Adminpak.msi file in the command line.

For example, to use the WINS snap-in to install a specific individual server administration tool, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server CD into the CD drive.
  2. In Windows Explorer, open the I386 folder on the Windows 2000 Server CD or on the Windows 2000 Advanced Server CD.
  3. Copy the Adminpak.msi file to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder on the hard disk.
  4. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:
    msiexec /i adminpak.msi ADDLOCAL=FeWINSConsole /qb
    To locate the WINS snap-in, click Start, point to Programs, and then click Administrative Tools.

Abbreviations for the Windows 2000 administration tools

You can use the method that is described in this article to install individual or additional Windows 2000 administration tools from the Windows 2000 Adminpak.msi file on Windows 2000-based computers by substituting the appropriate abbreviation of the server administration tool that you want to install. The following list contains more information about the abbreviations of the individual server administration tools.

Substitute the appropriate abbreviation of the server administration tool that you want to install in the command line. Troubleshooting

When you try to use Windows Installer command-line switches to install a server administration tool, you may receive the following error message:
Internal Error 2711
