Summary

This article describes how to promote a standalone server that is running Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, Enterprise Edition, from a standalone server to an enterprise array member.

You can install Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, Enterprise Edition, as a standalone server or as a member of an enterprise array. If you installed ISA Server 2000 as a standalone server, you can later promote the server to be an enterprise array member so that you can take full advantage of the ISA Server 2000 Web-caching array capabilities.

Requirements

To promote a standalone server that is running ISA Server 2000 to an enterprise array member, the following requirements must be met:
  • The standalone server must be a member of an Active Directory domain.
  • All of the servers in the array must be members of the same domain.
  • All of the servers in the array must belong to the same Active Directory site.
  • Active Directory must be initialized with the ISA Server Schema objects.
  • You must be logged on as an enterprise administrator.

How to Promote a Standalone ISA Server-Based Server to an Enterprise Array Member

To promote a standalone ISA Server 2000-based server:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Management.
  2. In the ISA Management console, right-click your server, and then click Promote.
  3. You are warned that the operation cannot be reversed. Click Yes to continue.
  4. In the Enterprise Policy Settings dialog box, you can specify whether enterprise policies should be activated for the array. If you choose to apply an enterprise policy, you can choose which enterprise policy to apply. You can also apply array policies, force packet filtering on the array, and activate publishing rules for the array. Make the appropriate choices for your organization, and then click OK.

After you click OK, the promotion process continues. During the promotion process, the configuration information is stored in Active Directory, services on the ISA Server 2000-based server are stopped and restarted, the changes are committed, and the array list is refreshed.
  5. When you are notified that the promotion process is completed, click OK.
  6. In the ISA Management console, right-click the Internet Security and Acceleration Server node in the left pane, and then click Connect to.
  7. Click Connect to Enterprise and Arrays, and then click OK. When you are connected to the array, the ISA Management console displays an Enterprise node in the left pane.
NOTE: After a standalone ISA Server 2000-based server joins an enterprise array, all of the Allow rules are removed from the array policy if an enterprise policy is enforced. If an enterprise policy is configured to allow array policies, you can create only more-restrictive policies at the array level. ISA Server 2000 enforces this configuration by preventing you from creating Allow policy rules at the array level.
