A message prompts you to upgrade anti-malware or antivirus software after you upgrade to Windows 10

Symptoms

When you upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, you receive the following message:

Your security software needs a new update.

This notification resembles the following screen shot.

Cause

This issue occurs if anti-malware or antivirus software was uninstalled from the computer because it was incompatible with Windows 10. This notification helps users reinstall a Windows 10-compatible version of a previously installed anti-malware or antivirus software. This notification may appear even if you have installed the anti-malware or antivirus software yourself.

Do not click this message window if you already have installed anti-malware or antivirus software after you upgrade to Windows 10. You may safely ignore this notification. The message window will eventually close by itself.
