This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac includes versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook that are designed for the Mac and yet are unmistakably Office. The February 16, 2016, update provides fixes for issues in the Office 2016 for Mac Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook).

- To install this update, you must be running OS X Yosemite 10.10 or a later version, and you must have a valid Microsoft Office 365 subscription. Additionally, see more information about Office 365 Subscription options.
- If you already have Office for Mac 2011 installed, you can run Office for Mac 2011 and Office 2016 for Mac side-by-side. If you want to remove Office for Mac 2011, see Uninstall Office 2011 for Mac.
- If you are prompted for a password when you install this update, enter the administrator password on Mac OS X. For more information, see Mac OS X: Software installations require administrator password.
Improvements and fixes
This update provides the following fixes and improvements:Outlook
- The keyboard shortcut for Forward message (Command+J) has been restored.
- When you move a message to another folder, its status as "read" or "unread" is now maintained.
- The Search tab on the ribbon appears only during searches but not when you are switching views.
- The Cancel Meeting command on the ribbon now works correctly.
- Message list filters on the View menu now work correctly.
- The sender's email address is now displayed on the email header. For messages that are sent from the same Exchange domain, only the sender's name is displayed.
Word
- More commands (such as New, Print, and Save) are added to the Quick Access toolbar in the upper-left corner of the window.
- When you print to PDF, the file name is now retained so that the name is not displayed as "Untitled.pdf."
- Old format document (.doc) files that are hosted on an NFS share will open as read-only.
PowerPoint
- You can apply the Morph transition to easily move several objects at once. For O365 subscribers only.
- More commands (such as New, Print, and Save) are added to the Quick Access toolbar in the upper-left corner of the window.
- Old format presentation (.ppt) files that are hosted on an NFS share will open as read-only.
Excel
- More commands (such as New, Print, and Save) are added to the Quick Access toolbar in the upper-left corner of the window.
- Old format workbook (.xls) files that are hosted on an NFS share will open as read-only.
