System crashes with Stop error 0x00000139 in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2

This article describes an issue in which Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2 crashes with Stop error "0x00000139". An update is available to fix this issue. Before you install this update, see the Prerequisites section.

Symptoms

This issue occurs when one or more computers on the network try to connect to a shared printer by using the Server Message Block version 1 (SMBv1) protocol. In this situation, the file server crashes with a Stop error message that looks something like this: 

STOP: 0x00000139 (Parameter1, Parameter2, Parameter3, Parameter4)

The Stop error occurs shortly after the SMBv1 server service fails to connect to the printer.

Notes
  • The parameters in this Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "0x00000139" Stop errors are caused by this issue.
