Cannot Mount Public Folder Store

Symptoms

You may not be able to mount the Exchange public folder store, and you may receive the following error message:
An internal processing error has occurred. Try restarting the Exchange System Manager or the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, or both.

Cause

The 0x8004010f error (ecNotFound-MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND) that is listed in the event ID 9519 message is a generic error that may have different causes. In this case, the first Exchange server was deleted. Because of conflicts, the corresponding public folder store is moved to the LostAndFound container. This problem also occurs if the old public store or the whole server is moved to the LostAndFoundConfig container.

Resolution

Warning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, or both Windows and Exchange. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:
  • Use Active Directory Users and Computers to delete the public folder store (ExchangeOld) from the LostAndFound container.

  • Use ADSI Edit to delete the public folder store (ExchangeOld) from the LostAndFound container.
On the properties of the mailbox store on the affected Exchange server, make sure that Default Public Store is pointing to an existing public folder store.
