This step-by-step article describes how to find out when and why the Exchange System Manager is communicating with Exchange 2000 Server components or Exchange Server 2003 components.
Requirements
Verify the Exchange System Manager Communication
- To start a command prompt, click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Run dialog box, and then click OK.
- To stop all IIS services, type the command iisreset /stop, and then press ENTER.
- To stop all Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 services, type the command net stop msexchangesa /y, and then press ENTER.
- To start the Exchange System Manager, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
- Expand the Servers container, expand your server, expand Protocols, and then click the protocol you are interested in, SMTP for example.
- Open the container Default SMTP Virtual Server. A red indicator means you that communication with IIS is not possible at this time.
- Under Default SMTP Virtual Server, click Queues. An Exchange System Manager warning informs you that the Queue Viewer is unable to retrieve an interface to the queues.
- Under Protocols, click the container First Storage Group. In the Exchange System Manager message that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service needs to be running, click OK.
- Attempt to open the Public Folders container under Folders, and note the Exchange System Manager error message that an operation failed. Click OK.
- Right-click the server node and then click Properties to receive another Exchange System Manager warning you that communication with the SA service is impossible. Click OK.
- In the server Properties dialog box, note that the field Domain Controller Used by Services on This Server remains empty, and then click OK.
- Quit Exchange System Manager, switch back to the command prompt, type iisreset /start to start all services again, and then optionally repeat steps 4 to 10.
