This article describes update KB3127981 for Microsoft PowerPoint 2016, which was released on December 6, 2016. This update has a prerequisite.
Be aware that the update on the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)

Improvements and fixes
- PowerPoint 2016 will now be able to open password protected files that are created in PowerPoint 2003.
- PowerPoint 2016 will no longer display Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) linked object paths that use escape characters.

- When you move sections in the Thumbnails pane in PowerPoint 2016, the size of the re-rendered slide thumbnails are bigger than expected and caret selection lines are overlapped with thumbnails. Meanwhile, the trailing thumbnails are invisible.
