Cannot use 32-bit resources on a 64-bit server cluster

When you try to install or bring online a 32-bit resource on a 64-bit server cluster, you may experience unexpected results. Specifically, the resource may not come online, or it may constantly attempt to failover to another node.

This behavior occurs because 64-bit processes cannot directly load 32-bit DLLs. Therefore the Resource Monitor (64-bit process) cannot directly load a 32-bit Cluster Resource DLL. Typically Cluster Resource DLLs are directly loaded in the process space of the Resource Monitor, and this means that only 64-bit DLLs can be loaded under the 64-bit Resource Monitor process.

Contact the vendor that created the program or cluster resource to obtain an updated 64-bit version. Microsoft Exchange 5.5, Microsoft Exchange 2000, Microsoft SQL 7.0 and Microsoft SQL 2000 use 32-bit cluster resources and are not supported on 64-bit server clusters.

To help determine if a cluster resource is 32-bit or 64-bit, use the VFI utility that is included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit.
