XADM: Message Tracking Center Does Not Track Messages or Functions Slowly After You Install Exchange 2000 SP2

Symptoms

After you install Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 (SP2), when you try to use the new Message Tracking Center to track messages, you may experience one or more of the following limitations:
  • You cannot track messages on your Exchange 2000 servers.
  • You cannot track messages by using a workstation that has Exchange 2000 Server SP2 installed.
  • You are able to track messages on Exchange 2000 servers that do not have Exchange 2000 Server SP2 installed, but it takes longer to track messages on those servers than on servers that do have Exchange 2000 Server SP2 installed.

More information

The new Message Tracking Center, which is part of Exchange 2000 Server SP2, can track e-mail anywhere in the entire Exchange organization, including servers that are running Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, or Exchange 2000 SP1.

The performance of the Message Tracking Center improves if you install and start the Microsoft Exchange Management Service on servers that run Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, or Exchange 2000 SP1. Also, in administrator-only installations, the Microsoft Exchange Management Service must be running on your workstation.
