A shortcut is created on the Windows 7 Start menu after you run an mm.exe file

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you run an executable file that's named mm.exe for the first time on a Windows 7-based computer, Windows creates a shortcut that's named Steam Dark Messiah Might and Magic: Single Player on the Start menu (Games section).

Cause

This issue occurs because the Application Compatibility System Database can't differentiate between the game .exe file (mm.exe) and other mm.exe files. Criteria such as Company Name and Product Name are missing from the mm.exe entry in the System database. Therefore, every process that's named mm.exe creates this kind of shortcut.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Don't use mm.exe as a process name.
  • Delete the shortcut entry after it has been created. The shortcut is created only after the first time that the process is started.

Note You can automate this method by using software distribution tools such as System Center Configuration Manager.

More Information

This issue is fixed in later versions of Windows (windows 8, 8.1, and 10).
