Summary

This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. To learn more about these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Security Bulletin MS16-088.

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains improvements and fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:

When you use Microsoft Active Accessibility to automate Outlook 2016, Outlook 2016 crashes.
Images in email messages aren't scaled correctly in Outlook 2016 if you use high DPI monitors.
Some symbol characters are displayed small in Windows 7 that has Japanese language installed. This update deletes GeoShape characters (0x25A0-0x25FF) from the extended symbol list.
When you switch to the Scheduling tab of an appointment in Outlook 2016 that has an Outlook Web Add-in running, Outlook 2016 may crash if the Web Add-in calls the item.body.getAsync method.
Some text that's written in certain scripts may not be formatted correctly.
When you try to reply or forward an email message that contains a linked image, Outlook 2016 freezes before the image is displayed.
Excel cells that are pasted as OLE links disappear in an email message in compose mode.
If an Outlook Web Add-in calls the item.body.getAsync method in some email messages, an incorrect value is returned.
For Office Add-in APIs, if a table's cell vertical alignment is changed, the table is no longer considered as uniform, and some table binding APIs don't work. This update fixes this issue, and table cells' vertical alignment will no longer affect a table's uniformness.
When you reconvert Japanese characters in a text box in Word 2016, CPU usage goes to 100 percent.
When you try to reply or forward an email message that contains a linked image, Outlook 2016 freezes before the image is displayed.
This update provides the latest version of OneDrive for Business for Office collaboration synchronization integration. It also enables coauthoring of Office documents that are synchronized by OneDrive in a reliable and high-performance manner. This update lets you use Office together with the latest version of OneDrive for Business for improved online and offline user experiences for all files that are synchronized.

Significant changes to the user experience include the following improvements:
- The ability to quickly open OneDrive synchronized files from anywhere (File Explorer, Most Recently Used list, or websites). This enables Office applications to open the correct file and keeping all changes in synchronization.
- Rich collaboration and sharing experiences.
- Offline edits of synchronized files.
- Auto synchronization of the changes to the cloud and as soon as you are online
