Ntbackup quits while backing up the system state on a domain controller

When you are running Ntbackup.exe to back up the system state on a domain controller, Ntbackup may quit silently. (Ntbackup quits without displaying any error messages.) This problem can occur when you back up to a tape or to a file. Additionally, you may receive the following event message in the system event log:

Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Shadow Copy writer EventLogs called routine BackupEventLogW which failed with status 0x800705aa (converted to 0x800423f4).

This problem can occur when you back up the system state on a domain controller that has more than 12 IP addresses on one network adapter.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To work around this problem, remove IP addresses until a single network adapter has no more than 12 IP addresses.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
