Fingerprint reader fails intermittently when you resume from sleep or hibernation

Symptoms

The fingerprint reader that you use to log on to Windows 7 intermittently fails to log you on when you try to resume the computer from sleep or hibernation.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a timing issue that causes Windows to receive incorrect attribute values from the fingerprint reader when you try to resume the computer from sleep or hibernation.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Workaround 1

Try again to log on. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Sleep or Hibernate on the Lock button menu to return the computer to a non-active state.
  2. Try again to log on by using the fingerprint reader.

Workaround 2

Disable and then re-enable the fingerprint reader. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on by using the keyboard.
  2. After the system is resumed, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Hardware and Sound.
  4. Under Devices and Printers, click Device Manager.
  5. Expand Biometric Devices.
  6. Right-click <fingerprint_reader>, click Disable, and then click Yes when you are prompted.
  7. Right-click <fingerprint_reader>, and then click Enable.
Note In steps 6 and 7, <fingerprint_reader> represents the actual device name, depending on the device manufacturer and model. For more information, see the device user manual or go to the manufacturer's website.
