Symptoms

In a mixed-mode Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 organization, you may receive non-delivery reports (NDRs) when you are sending mail to a mail-enabled public folder in Exchange 2000. You can still post to the malfunctioning folder through Installable File System (IFS) and Outlook Web Access (OWA). Public folder replication is also working correctly for these posted messages.

Cause

In a mixed-mode Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 organization, if the same public folder proxy object is created in Exchange Server 5.5 and Active Directory before the Active Directory Connector (ADC) creates it, the ADC creates duplicate objects. This can result in NDRs when you send mail to the public folder.

After you install Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2, new public folders will match up through the legacyExchangeDN attribute. The mismatched public folder proxies are now matched up correctly by the ADC. This eliminates the NDRs when you send mail to a particular mail-enabled public folders.
