Error occurs when you manage audit policies, performance counters don't work, or mailbox backup fails in Windows

This article describes an issue in which an error occurs when you manage audit policies, performance counters don't work, or mailbox backup fails in Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. A hotfix is available to fix this issue. Before you install this hotfix, see the Prerequisites section.

Issues that are fixed in thie hotfix

Issue 1

Assume that you use Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) to manage audit policies after you install MS15-076: Vulnerability in Windows Remote Procedure Call could allow elevation of privilege: July 14, 2015 or Microsoft security advisory: Update to harden use of DES encryption: July 14, 2015. You receive an error message that looks something like this:

Security Template

The Group Policy security settings that apply to this machine could not be determined. The error received when trying to retrieve these settings from the local policy database (%%windir%%\security\database\secedit.sdb) was: An extended error has occurred.

All local security settings will be displayed, but no indication will be given as to whether or not a given security setting is defined by Group Policy.

Issue 2

Some performance counters don't work after a cluster failover.

Issue 3

After you install MS15-076: Vulnerability in Windows Remote Procedure Call could allow elevation of privilege: July 14, 2015, mailbox backup may fail. And the logs indicate that a call to IMAPIContainer::OpenEntry() or IMAPIProp::OpenProperty() fails with a "MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND" error.

Resolution

Hotfix information

Important If you install a language pack after you install this hotfix, you must reinstall this hotfix. Therefore, we recommend that you install any language packs that you need before you install this hotfix. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.


A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that's described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there's a "Hotfix Download Available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section doesn't appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to get the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, install update 2919355 in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2. Or, install Service Pack 1 in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

To use the hotfix in this package, you don't have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix doesn't replace a previously released hotfix.
