Linux DNS client can't resolve domain names if it sends IPv4 and IPv6 queries to Windows Server 2012 R2 at the same time

This article describes an issue that occurs when Linux DNS client sends IPv4 and IPv6 queries to Windows Server 2012 R2 at the same time. A hotfix is available to fix this issue. Before you install this hotfix, see the Prerequisites section.

Symptoms

This issue occurs when the Linux DNS client virtual machines are running on Azure. The recursive resolver order of the DNS queries is non-deterministic. If the IPv6 query is processed first and the IPv6 record doesn't exist, the Windows Server 2012-based DNS server may respond with a negative answer instead of an empty successful response. Therefore, the Linux DNS client may fail the query. 

Note The issue only occurs when the extension mechanisms for DNS (EDNS) are enabled.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that's described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

 To apply this hotfix, install update 2919355 in Windows Server 2012 R2.
