All enterprises in Malaysia would need to fill GST return on regular basis (monthly or quarterly). For auditing purpose, they also need to generate GST audit file and submit to Customs department upon request.
GAF mainly contains the following information for a taxable period:
• Company information
• Purchases
• Supply
• Ledger transactions
• Summary
Specific for the "Purchase" and "Supply" sections, besides vendor invoices and sales invoices, practically when there are GST recoverable or GST payable generating from transactions, the transactions should be regarded as either "purchase" or "supply" respectively from GST perspective.
For instance, when April makes payment to vendors, Contoso also needs to pay bank fees to banks. As per Malaysia GST regulations, GST will be applied to the bank charge. Bank will provide GST invoice to Contoso and hence Contoso are able to claim the GST input tax. When generating the GAF file, tax authority is expecting to see the bank charges are regarded as "purchases" in GAF.
