XADM: Cannot Set Secondary Address as Primary on a Contact

When you create a secondary e-mail address for a contact and attempt to set this address as the primary or reply address, you cannot because the Set to Primary option is unavailable. You notice the following conditions:

• The E-Mail Addresses tab User Interface states:
  Each e-mail address type has one default reply address. To change the default, select an entry in the list, and then click Set As Primary.
• You cannot set the secondary address as the primary address.
• You cannot remove the primary address. If you try to do so, you receive the following error message:
  This is the home e-mail address of this recipient. It cannot be removed. ID no: c10312e8.

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: After you apply Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2, the Set as Primary option will be available, and you can set a secondary e-mail address as the primary address.

If you select a secondary address to be set as the primary address, this also changes the targetAddress value.

The behavior is consistent on both the E-mail Addresses and the Exchange General tabs.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.
