Error 0x80070004 upgrading to Windows 10 with computer name SYSTEM, LOCAL, SELF, System, or Network

Symptoms

On a device with Windows 7 or 8.1, and the Computer Name is set to one of the following, you will encounter error 0x80070004 when trying to upgrade to Windows 10, and the upgrade will fail:
  • System (or SYSTEM)
  • LOCAL
  • SELF
  • Network

Cause

SYSTEM, LOCAL, SELF, System, and Network are reserved names that can’t be used for Computer Name.

Resolution

For Windows 8 or 8.1:

  1. Swipe in from the right to bring up the charms, select Search, and search for rename computer (or just type rename computer from the Start screen). Select Rename this computer.
  2. Type a new computer name in the name field, select Apply, and then OK.

If you receive error code 0x80070004 when trying to upgrade to Windows 10, but your device’s Computer Name is not one of the reserved names, you may have redirected or move your Users folder, which is not supported. For more information about that issue, see Knowledge Base article 2876597.
